A New York Love Story
October 26, 2007 by ivy-baby
Early this afternoon I saw this romantic New York love story on Star Movies. I didn’t get the
title, but it’s about an 11 year old boy Gabe and his first love Rosemary. It seemed corny at first. I thought, who
would watch the love story of an 11-year old couple? Eventually, it caught me
coz even a kids’ stuff puppy love can relate to me. Or was it the other way
around? It reminded me of the sweet memories of a first date with a guy you
really like, first kiss, the feeling of butterflies in your stomach that you
want to vomit, that special look, and yeah, being in love. As Gabe said it, “I
never felt too ridiculously wonderful!” Are there any more beautiful words in
the English dictionary than “See you tomorrow!”? It was startling how warm
it felt to recall all those things that I had too. It was more than fun. It was
the moment itself, the time that you actually spent together just laughing and
talking like you never ran out of anything to say. As for them, they walked in
the park, ate ice cream, rode the scooter block by block, watched a concert, practiced karate together. When he
gave Rosemary that first kiss, she was taken aback and didn’t know what to do. He
wondered if she liked what he did. Was she mad at him for kissing her?
The
climax though was when Gabe lost himself because of the overwhelming feeling. He
said bitter things to her, telling her he hated her out of confusion.
“It’s amazing how things move so fast. Just yesterday I loved her, but now I
don’t even care about her anymore.”
The next day after he hurt her, Gabe lingered on with what
he did. Until he couldn’t take it anymore, he went to look for Rosemary. He
realized he was actually in love with her and had to tell her before she leaves
for camp for six weeks and totally lose her from there. That could only be his only
chance of showing her how sorry he was. “Love is not about ridiculous words,
but grand gestures… It’s about going an extra mile even if it hurts…”
Of course, they didn’t end up together. Adults dating for weeks can’t even get
close to a relationship! But Gabe posed an
important question, “How come all love has to end?” His mom gave me the
comforting answer, “Some things are like sky-riding… they’re only meant to last
a moment.” They were just two ships that passed by each other for a while.
It was a sad ending, alright, but it reopened my eyes to the
bitter facts of the ugly business called Love. Besides, he is still young.
Too young to even know what love is. I cannot refute that. And so I rest my case.
